Centrium 1 and 2, Woking
The project involved the design and construction of three blocks in a landmark development adjacent to Woking station. Centrium 1 comprises 240 apartments on a site that had already been cleared to ground level. The smaller east block has 60 'affordable' apartments within an extended oval shape located on the foot way facing Station Approach, and parallel with the railway tracks to the rear. This building has an overall footprint of 62m x 15m.
The larger west block comprises 180 apartments that were for general sale. Its extended oval form is 16 stories high and follows Victoria Road and the railway lines. Its footprint is 150m x 16m.
The development contains 176 car parking spaces, access and landscaping, and some commercial units. Foundations are continuous flight augured piles. The superstructure is formed from an in-situ reinforced concrete frame. Facades are of coloured rain screen render and curtain walling. Each apartment has a balcony.
Centrium 2 comprises a multi story residential building of 48 apartments on Oriental Road in Woking, on the other side of Station Approach from Centrium 1. This is a new development to a height of 9 stories including under croft car parking.
Many construction challenges were involved in this project, including maintaining safe access to the railway station at all times, and operating a major construction project alongside the railway. This entailed extensive consultation and liaison with Network Rail. This project was awarded an NHBC 'Pride in the Job' award for the outstanding quality of its finishing.
